A Brief History

It may sound surprising, but it’s true.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 90% of people worldwide will develop at least one cavity during their lifetime.

This makes tooth decay even more common than the common cold.

As far back as the civilizations of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, toothache was believed to be caused by a mysterious “tooth worm” that slowly ate away at the tooth from within.

It wasn’t until the 19th century that scientists identified the true cause – bacteria that convert sugars into acids, gradually destroying tooth enamel.

Interesting Fact

Tooth decay is much more than “a hole in a tooth.”

It is an infectious disease that can affect overall health.

Untreated cavities may lead to:

  • Persistent inflammation.
  • Pain and infection.
  • Tooth loss.
  • An increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • A higher risk of premature birth during pregnancy.

Perhaps the most remarkable fact is that tooth decay is almost entirely preventable, despite affecting billions of people worldwide.

What Does This Mean for You?

The good news is that tooth decay can often be stopped before it progresses.

The most effective protection includes:

  • Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Reducing the frequency of sugary food and drink consumption.
  • Attending preventive dental check-ups every six months.

At Charani Clinic, we can detect the earliest signs of tooth decay – often before any pain develops – allowing us to intervene early and, in many cases, prevent the need for a filling altogether.
